Spyware and Adware: The Origins

Spyware and adware where originally conceived as an advertising tool. Spyware would log browsing habits so that relevant adverts, adware, could be used to try to boost sales income. Malware came later once more criminally minded people realised it could be used for nefarious means.

This is still the way both spyware and adware are most widely used today. Because of that the best security software can block nearly everything from ever reaching your computer and relieving you of the annoyance and frustration that goes hand in hand with an infected computer.

What about spyware’s actual origins? Hmmm….Real Player.

Real media was the first major software company to use spyware and adware in a big way. It came as part of their player package and was automatically downloaded to a computer that installed the player.

After that a number of big name software providers began to emulate this and the spread of spyware and adware into everything we do online was rapid and all pervasive.

But spyware was also utilised for other less obvious purposes. In truth it’s actually everywhere, both on the internet and our computers and is so tightly woven in it is barely even recognised for what it really is.

Consider what spyware actually is:

It’s a small software program that sits on a computer logging and sending information to a third party.

How many things do you think you have on your computer that do that?

Virtually every major software company has a way of logging both you and your computer information along with a serial key or registration code. It’s how they combat piracy but really it’s a form of spyware.

Windows authentication tool is a form of spyware. Windows automatic update is another form of spyware.

In general descriptive terms anything that behaves like that is classified as spyware. It’s absolutely everywhere when you think about it and you can’t actually use your computer properly or even go online without it. That’s the genuine bottom line; the unspoken truth. Both spyware and adware are utilised widely by the major players in the software industry.

The major players in the anti spyware and adware industry use the very same tactics and many of their software programs don’t do their jobs as efficientl 1000 y as they probably could. Not that I’m suggesting some kind of conspiracy theory, but it does make you think.
